Youth Programs

Middle School Ministry

Can Church be fun? In Middle School Ministry, we build the message that faith can be fun or serious, and God is really with us in everything we do, say and experience!

Small group activities are led by youth and adult volunteer aides. Meetings are filled with games, sharing sessions, reflection time, prayer experiences and group building challenges to help 7th and 8th graders learn that faith weaves through every part of life. We emphasize mutual respect and good listening skills.

Registration for the next school year starts in May and closes at the end of September. We meet Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the school gym. The Middle School Ministry program starts in September and ends in May.

Youth Ministry

Youth Ministry invites incoming 9th to 12th grade candidates to be with each other and Christ Jesus at the same time! Registration for the next school year starts in May and closes at the end of September. Youth Ministry is the first year requirement for youth wanting to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Incoming 9th to 12th grade students who attend one year of parish Youth Ministry and one Youth Ministry retreat are eligible for Confrimation enrollment in the spring of their Youth Ministry year.

God's presence becomes meaningful through games, active conversation, hands-on projects, skits, group building, music, and prayer. The things that happen in Youth Ministry are possible through the efforts of Emmaus Peer Ministry leaders who lead playful and prayerful moments. We meet Mondays 6:30pm-8:30pm in the school gym. The Youth Ministry program starts in September and ends in June.

Sacrament Preparation

We provide First Communion and/or First Reconciliation for students participating in the Middle School Ministry, Youth Ministry, or Confirmation if needed. Please call the Youth Ministry Office at 510-741-4900 x210, for more information.

Confirmation Preparation

Most children celebrate the sacrament of Baptism as infants. For teenagers, Confirmation Preparation offers opportunity and choice to deepen the commitment to the Catholic faith initially made at Baptism.

Candidates eligible for Confirmation Preparation are those who attend one year of parish Youth Ministry and one Youth Ministry retreat. During confirmation class, we: help strengthen the connection to Jesus, offer time for faith sharing and questioning, support times of need, brainstorm service opportunities and teach about the Sacrament of Confirmation. Interaction between candidates is led by Confirmation teachers committed to helping students grow spiritually. Confirmation preparation involves: coming to class, performing Christian Ministry projects, fulfilling the Sunday Youth Mass requirement, participation in a weekend retreat, and receiving active support from family and sponsors.

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 3:00-5:00pm in the gym, with Youth Mass to follow, from September to June. The Rite of Confirmation Mass usually takes place in the spring.

Leadership Ministry

Emmaus Peer Ministry and Confirmation Teacher

Youth Ministry gains its' energy and ideas through 10th-12th graders and college-age young adults in Emmaus Peer Ministry who are committed to sharing the Catholic faith with their peers. Confirmation thrives on teaching and faith-sharing skills of 11th-12th graders and adults on the Confirmation Team.

These models of ministry promote ownership in one's faith community and responsible leadership among peers. Applications for either group start in the spring. These ministries are open to past and current Youth Ministry and Confirmation students who actively and regularly practice their Catholic faith. Students are suported regularly through training and enrichment.

Sunday 5:30 PM Mass

In the Church on Sunday evenings at 5:30pm. The Mass is youth-oriented since ministries mostly involve young people. The presider(priest) tries to focus the homily towards young people. Mass lets us worship and give thanks to Jesus. Faith can grow as young people worship Jesus Christ in the company of family, friend and community. We encourage young people to attend this Mass as often as they are able. Confirmation students are required to attend this Mass on Sundays we have class.

Young people are involved through various ministries of: Choir(vocal or musical), Usher, Altar server, or Environment Committee (decorating church for liturgical seasons). Confirmed youth can become Eucharistic Ministers (communion) or Lectors (readings) for Mass. We hope to continue increasing the number of young people invovled in ministries. Please call the Youth Ministry Office at 510-741-4900 x210 if you are interested in a liturgical ministry.
